Because Mindfulness developed from ancient Buddhist practices, we tend to think of it as being foreign, difficult, and without benefit for our society. Yet, Mindfulness practices are clinically proven to be useful for stress reduction and reducing or eliminating hypertension (high blood pressure). They can also help people minimize and cope with anxiety, depression, and chronic pain and help heal these and other effects of trauma. And, they are easy to learn and integrate into our daily lives enhancing our ability to perform at our highest potential.

 

Mindfulness has received attention due to the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. His completed studies have found that with Mindfulness training, pain-related drug utilization was decreased, and activity levels and feelings of self-esteem increased.

 

Kabat-Zinn states, “Mindfulness practice is ideal for cultivating greater awareness of the unity of mind and body, as well as of the ways the unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can undermine emotional, physical, and spiritual health.”
